Positive Behavior Support Procedures

(Step by Step)

1.

Teaching Staff have concern about a child's persistent challenging behavior in the classroom.

2.

Contact the Centers' Manager to discuss your concerns and next steps.

If child is intensely disruptive, aggressive, and/or a safety/flight risk, call Centers' Manger IMMEDIATELY and notify parent/guardian.

Refer to "Managing Dangerous Behaviors Procedures" and
"De-escalation Techniques".

3.

Collect and Review Information

Review ASQ's, enrollment info, etc.

Collect more info from parent/guardian(s) if necessary and parent/guardian willing (medical, family dynamics, sleeping and eating schedules, traumatic events, etc.).

"My Teacher Wants to Know" form can be used for this. Complete the "Behavior Support Child Information Sheet".

Begin documenting children's behavior using running observations and Behavior Observation Reports (BOR).

Request Social Emotional Coach to come observe the child.

or

Review Classroom Environment & Supports

Using the "Responsive Caregiving", "High Quality Environments", and "Social Emotional Strategies" implementation checklists as a guide, reflect on how you are:
1. Building relationships with the child and family
2. Creating a Supportive Environment
3. Teaching Social and Emotional Skills

Use "Tiered Action Plan" to record what else you can do in those 3 areas to support the child.

4.

Meeting #1: Team Including Centers' Manager, Teaching Staff, & ECMHC

Using the "Pyramid Model Practices Implementation Checklist" as a guide, reflect on how you are:

1. Building relationships with the child and family
2. Creating a Supportive Environment
3. Teaching Social and Emotional Skills

Using the "PTR-YC Goal Sheet", set short term goals and discuss the long term vision for the child. Review the Functional Behavioral Assessment Checklists for staff to complete. They will bring these to the next meeting. Set next meeting date.

5.

Meeting #2: Team Including Centers' Manager, Teaching Staff, & ECMHC
to do Functional Behavioral Assessment

Using "PTR-YC Summary Table", the team will compile the Assessment Checklists and use "The 4 Functions of Behavior" handout to develop a hypothesis statement.

Discuss strategies to prevent challenging behavior and teach & reinforce desired behaviors.

Set next meeting and include parent/guardian.

Pass out "What to Expect from the Prevent, Teach, Reinforce for Young Children Process" to parent/guardian.

6.

Meeting #3: Team Including Centers' Manager, Teaching Staff, ECMHC, & Parent/Guardian(s) to discuss the Child and Develop the Behavior Support Plan

Staff uses this information to develop the "PTR-YC Intervention Plan". This will have more detail and outline the prevent, teach, and reinforce strategies to be used, as well as the plan for implementation.

Review with staff. See Beanstalk PTR-YC Procedures.

7.

Monitoring & Follow-Up

ECMHC will observe once per week to monitor and support implementation.

Child Support Team including parent/guardian(s) will meet once per month to monitor progress and revise plan plan if necessary.
